VERTAcef-AV is a combination medication used in the treatment of hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP), which are serious lung infections commonly contracted in healthcare settings, particularly among patients on mechanical ventilation.This formulation typically includes Ceftazidime and Avibactam. Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the destruction of bacteria. However, certain bacteria produce enzymes called beta-lactamases, which can break down antibiotics like Ceftazidime and render them ineffective. This is where Avibactam plays a critical role—it is a non-beta-lactam beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects Ceftazidime from degradation, allowing it to act effectively against resistant bacterial strains.
VERTAcef-AV is especially useful in treating severe infections caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacteriaceae, which are common culprits in HABP and VABP cases.
