PERsyn is a topical medication primarily used for the treatment of scabies, a highly contagious skin condition caused by infestation of mites (Sarcoptes scabiei). These microscopic parasites burrow into the skin, causing intense itching, redness, inflammation, and a rash that typically worsens at night. PERsyn contains Permethrin, a synthetic chemical that belongs to the pyrethrin class of medications, which are well-known for their potent insecticidal properties.Permethrin works by attacking the nervous system of mites, effectively paralyzing and killing both the adult mites and their eggs. By eliminating the root cause of the infection, it provides rapid relief from itching and prevents the infestation from spreading to others. It is usually applied as a cream to the entire body from the neck down and left on for a specific duration (commonly 8–12 hours), then washed off thoroughly.
One application is often sufficient, but in more severe or resistant cases, a second dose may be recommended by a healthcare provider. While generally well tolerated, some users may experience mild skin irritation, redness, or a temporary increase in itching after application. Maintaining hygiene, washing clothes and bedding, and treating close contacts are essential steps for complete recovery and prevention of reinfestation.
