Description & Effects
PANTOLEX IV is an intravenous (IV) formulation of Pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production in various acid-related gastrointestinal conditions. It is commonly administered in hospital settings when oral administration is not possible or practical, such as in patients who are unable to swallow, are unconscious, or have severe vomiting.Pantolex IV is indicated for short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other conditions where the stomach produces excessive acid. It is also used to manage upper gastrointestinal bleeding risks related to acid secretion.
The medication is provided as a powder that must be reconstituted with a sterile diluent before being administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. For GERD, Pantoprazole IV is typically given once daily for 7 to 10 days. For hypersecretory conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, it may be administered every 8 to 12 hours, depending on the severity and clinical response.
Pantolex IV is generally well tolerated, but some patients may experience mild side effects such as headache, nausea, abdominal pain, or reactions at the injection site. As with all PPIs, long-term use should be monitored to prevent complications such as magnesium deficiency or increased infection risk.
Pantolex IV should only be used under medical supervision.
