Kivolac contains lactulose, a synthetic sugar used mainly to treat constipation and certain liver-related conditions. Lactulose works by drawing water into the intestines through a process called osmosis. This extra water softens the stool, making it easier to pass and helping relieve constipation. Since lactulose is not digested or absorbed in the small intestine, it reaches the colon where it is fermented by natural gut bacteria. This fermentation produces acids that help increase bowel movement and also lower the pH in the colon.In addition to treating constipation, lactulose is also used to manage hepatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by liver disease where toxins like ammonia build up in the blood and affect brain function. By acidifying the colon, lactulose traps ammonia and reduces its absorption, helping protect brain health.
