Tobramycin Sulphate 0.3% w/v

Description & Effects

Fytobra contains Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the eyes and respiratory tract. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Tobramycin binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, interrupting the translation process and preventing the bacteria from producing proteins necessary for their survival and replication. This bactericidal action makes it highly effective against a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as certain Gram-positive strains.

Fytobra is commonly used in the form of eye drops or ointments for conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis. In inhaled or systemic form, it can be used for lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients or other serious infections, usually under hospital supervision. It begins to act quickly upon application and helps reduce symptoms like redness, swelling, discharge, and discomfort.

To ensure optimal results, it should be used exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional, typically 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 4–6 hours, depending on the severity. Overuse or misuse may lead to resistance or side effects like burning, stinging, or in rare cases, ototoxicity or nephrotoxicity if used systemically. Prolonged use should be avoided unless recommended by a doctor.
