Description & Effects

ATG (Anti-Thymocyte Globulin) is an immunosuppressive therapy commonly used in transplant patients and in the treatment of aplastic anemia. While effective, it may cause a range of side effects, which can vary depending on the patient's condition, dosage, and concurrent medications.

Some of the commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and indigestion. Gastrointestinal symptoms may be mild to moderate and often subside with continued use or supportive treatment. Dizziness, headache, and tremors are also frequently observed, especially during or shortly after infusion. These neurological effects may be transient but should be monitored carefully.

Skin-related reactions such as rash, itching, urticaria (hives), and excessive sweating may occur due to hypersensitivity. In some cases, serious allergic reactions or serum sickness may develop, requiring medical attention. Patients may also experience an increased heart rate (tachycardia), which should be evaluated, particularly in individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.

Changes in serum aminotransferase levels may indicate liver stress or mild liver injury. Regular liver function monitoring is essential during therapy.

Overall, while ATG is a potent and valuable immunosuppressive agent, its use requires careful supervision. Pre-medication and close monitoring during infusion help minimize risks and manage side effects effectively.
