AMCYL-500 is a potent combination of two medicines: Imipenem and Cilastatin, used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections. This combination belongs to the class of carbapenem antibiotics and is particularly effective against infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria.Imipenem is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic that works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for bacterial survival. By disrupting this process, Imipenem kills the bacteria and helps control the infection. It is highly effective against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including those that are resistant to other antibiotics.
Cilastatin is not an antibiotic but a dehydropeptidase-I inhibitor. It prevents the degradation of Imipenem by inhibiting the enzyme dehydropeptidase-I found in the kidneys. Without Cilastatin, Imipenem would be rapidly broken down and eliminated from the body, reducing its effectiveness. Cilastatin ensures that therapeutic levels of Imipenem are maintained in the bloodstream for a longer period, enhancing its antibacterial efficacy.
AMCYL-500 is typically used in hospital settings for treating severe infections like pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sepsis.
